As we travel through the diverse landscape of Morocco during the Christmas break, we are surprised literally at every corner with breathtaking beauty, incredible landscape and adventure. Even with expectations being so high now, nothing quite prepared us for the little Kasbah of Ait-Ben-Haddou which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . This place takes you back in time and it has been used as the location for blockbusters like Gladiator, Game of Throne Season 3, Prince of Persia, Ben Hur, King Tut, Cleopatra and many others.
Where: Close to the town of Ouarzazate which is about 3 hours from Marrakech. Your can get a guided tour or you can rent a car and go to the region for a day or two. We recommend the latter if you are comfortable with mountain driving. Alternatively, you can simply take a one way taxi from Marrakech to enjoy the region without the hustle of an organized tour.
Things to See: In addition, make sure you stop by at Atlas Studios and you will be amazed at the classics that have been filmed here. Right from 2016 block busters to 1980’s classic! The town can benefit from more tourism and the popularity of the movies has done little to promote the local economy through tourism
Tip: Rent ATV’s from the nearby location on the main road and your guide will take you on a tour of the breathtaking landscapes, crossing streams and hills to approach the town from the back like caravans have done for thousands of years! It’s really an experience of a lifetime!
Recommendation: To make the most out of you trip, you can consider staying at the Oscar hotel which is in the Atlas studios. This place is ‘literally’ designed for rock stars and celebrities and you will be very comfortable.
There is a highly developed film industry and we got a walking tour of a nearby film studio that left us speechless! Here are some pictures of Atlas Studios as well. The list of movies is stellar including classics like Gladiator, Ben Hur, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Dalai Lama, Cleopetra and numerous others
